Rode home along brand, spankin'-new bike lanes on Beacon Street from Cleveland Circle around the Chestnut Hill Reservoir. Lots more to be done. Boston will stripe up to the Boston/Newton border. And, there are stencils, signs, and striped buffers to come.

Very good. I have long observed motorists driving either on the far right or the far left of those wide lanes, and while driving myself I've seen people try to pass me on the right before the curve. I always thought it was only a matter of time before one of those idiots in a hurry would pass someone on the right and hit a cyclist whom they could not see. These lanes will keep motorists in their place!

It is a study which suggests that cycle lanes don't improve safety for cyclists. It's from Britain, where the streets tend to be a bit narrower though.
At 1:50, that drain/pothole is the width of the lane. Bummer. And now a jogger wants to run on pavement next to traffic, when there's a nice, smooth cinder running path along the reservoir? Whatever spins her propeller, I guess... But aside from those quibbles, a thing of beauty. I look forward to using it tomorrow. And I'm about to dash off a thanks email to Nicole.
